Steve retired from the world of high finance and the hustle and bustle of suburban Chicago in the mid-1990s. He and his family relocated to the laid back community of West Linn, Oregon, just south of Portland where he promptly converted his garage into a cane rod craftsman’s paradise. Kiley rods are based on the classic tapers of master craftsman such as Hiram Leonard, Lyle Dickerson, and Pinky Gillum. All of Steve’s rods utilize the finest Chinese Tonkin cane and incorporate high quality, nickel silver agate stripping guides, Snake® brand bronze snake guides and nickel silver Bellinger ferrules with matching hardwood ferrule plugs and nickel silver winding checks. The Bellinger reel seats feature premium wood inserts and nickel silver hardware. The rods are finished with expertly wound silk wraps and a proven multi-layer polyurethane varnish, applied glass smooth, in a specially engineered facility to ensure top notch functionality and enduring beauty.
All of Steve's rods are offered in a standard model complete with custom made bag, labeled aluminum tube and standard hardwood ferrule plug(s) and a Deluxe model which features beautifully crafted inlaid mosiac butt caps, ferrule plugs, and winding checks in your choice of Turqouis or Black Onyx. Simply put, your new Kiley Classic will not disappoint!

STEVE KILEY DELUXE "FALL RIVER" ~ 7' ~ 2/2 ~ 3.2 oz. ~ 4wt. ~ New ~ This Deluxe model pictured above is based on a proprietary taper that Steve recently developed and features a beautifully crafted turquois inlaid mosaic butt cap, ferrule plug, and winding check, gorgeous blonde cane, 3 x 3 spiral nodes, translucent tan silks tipped black, smooth and tight fitting N/S ferrules and Big Leaf Maple burl reel seat with N/S cap and ring hardware. The rod was completed with Steve's expertly applied glass smooth varnish. Comes with a high quality bag and labeled black wrinkle-finish aluminum tube. This small stream special will handle a DT-3, WF-4 and/or DT-4 and produces excellent roll-casts. I liked it best with a Cortland Clear Creek WF-4. I would not hesitate to put Steve’s rods up against any rod made today for quality, appearance, and performance. He just might be the best “unknown” maker out there today!

Steve Kiley Hollowbuilt “North Star” ~ 7'9” ~ 2/2 ~ 3.5 ~ 4/5wt. SN 08091 ~ EXC+ ~ Stephen Kiley began making bamboo fly rods around 1975, although it is only recently that his fine work has begun to show up on a regular basis. This quality-crafted star-hollowed rod pictured above was built in 2009 from a proprietary taper that Steve developed and features blonde cane with 3 x 3 nodes, book-matched tips, translucent tan silks tipped black and a perfectly executed varnish finish that is among the best in the business. Chrome-housed amber agate stripper, H&H bronze snakes and tip-tops. Smooth and perfectly fit N/S ferrules (with blank onyx inlaid mosaic ferrule plug) give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. Comfortable cigar grip. Mortised Circassian walnut seat with D/L’ing N/S cap and ring hardware. Petite N/S WC. No HK. Comes with a high quality bag and black aluminum tube with makers label and rod stats. This wand is very light in the the hand and the medium-slow action will toss nice loops with when in the hands of a patient caster and the soft action will certainly protect the finest of tippets. Though marked as a No. 5, I really preferred casting it with a WF-4. $895

Comfortable cigar grip and a beautiful circassian walnut burl seat with N/S D/L'ing cap and ring hardware. Comes with a high quality bag with hang tag and brass capped aluminum tube. I found the brisk medium to medium-fast action and delicate tips to be a perfect match with a Cortland 444 Peach DT-4 and WF-5. As soon as you remove the butt section from its bag, you’ll immediately note that it was crafted by a mature hand and you certainly won’t be disappointed!

Steve Kiley “Umpqua”~ 8.5' ~ 2/2 ~ 5.8oz. ~ 6wt. ~ EXC+ ~ Stephen Kiley began making bamboo fly rods around 1975, although it is only recently that his fine work has begun to show up on a regular basis. This quality-crafted rod pictured above was built in 2009 based on a Gillum steelhead taper that Steve modified. The result was a silky smooth rocket launcher. This is one of the nicest 6 wt. rods I’ve cast in quite some time (it will also handle a 7 with ease). It features blonde cane with 3 around spiral nodes, book-matched tips, translucent tan silks tipped black and a perfectly executed varnish finish that is among the best in the business. Chrome-housed amber agate stripper, H&H bronze snakes and tip-tops. Smooth and perfectly fit N/S ferrules (with blank onyx ferrule plug) give a resounding ‘pop’ when separated. Comfortable modified cigar grip. Mortised Circassian walnut seat with D/L’ing N/S screw and slide hood hardware. Petite N/S WC. No HK. Comes with a high quality bag and labeled brass-capped aluminum tube. Steve’s offering simply exude quality.
From time to time, Steve offers prototypes and shop rods at a reduced price. Most are new, but may have either been lawn casted or fished a handful of times.
